Factors Enabling Outpatient Total Knee Replacements in a Small Hospital

John Song

Dr. John Song obtained his Medical Degree from Queen’s University in 1993. This was followed by a residency at the University of Ottawa in Orthopaedic Surgery, graduating from that program in 1998. He went on to finish an additional Fellowship there in 1999 subspecializing in Shoulder Surgery under Dr. Patrick Murnaghan.  Since 1999, he has been practicing in the Niagara Region in Ontario principally at the Welland Hospital.  Although the original plan was to pursue a small community practice career, uncontrollable forces sidetracked this intention. First, in 2001 all the small separate Niagara hospitals were amalgamated into a single administrative organization (the NHS), and second, not long after, the NHS became affiliated with McMaster University’s De Groote Medical School Niagara Campus. Nevertheless Dr. Song has embraced teaching responsibilities as a Professor Adjunct, as well as serving administratively on numerous committees and departments that naturally accompany large organizations like the Niagara Health System. Having experienced the best of both worlds, he has strived to preserve the small town values and complexion of a small community hospital practice while at the same time seizing the opportunities to contribute academically where they arise.
